Weekly Market Update, "Mixed Signals"

"Dr. Erfaun Norooz Weekly" is a report offering expert insights into cryptocurrency and global financial markets.

1. Stock Market shows Mixed Signals
Stock ownership among U.S. households has climbed to a record 60–65%, either through direct investments or retirement accounts. At the same time, allocations to corporate equities have reached 45.8% in early 2026, marking one of the highest readings in nearly eight decades.
Historically, this level of retail participation has often been seen during the later stages of a bull market. Yet investor sentiment paints a much more cautious picture. The Fear & Greed Index remains in the Fear zone, while investor surveys continue to reflect a predominantly bearish outlook.
This divergence is largely driven by the recent market correction, which has pushed nearly 60% of technology stocks into bear market territory.

2. Technical Overview of the Stock Market

Dow Jones Industrial Average
The Dow Jones continues to outperform the other major U.S. indices. The index has successfully converted the 52,300 resistance level into support, reinforcing the current uptrend. This price action suggests investors are rotating capital away from technology and into more defensive value sectors, including financials, industrials, and healthcare.
S&P 500
The S&P 500 continues to encounter significant resistance near 7,520. Although the broader weekly trend remains under pressure due to a series of lower highs, the index is currently consolidating within a wide trading range between 7,340 and 7,520.
Nasdaq-100
Technology shares remain under pressure. The Nasdaq-100 was unable to sustain a move above 29,700, confirming that level as firm resistance. Immediate support is located at 28,550. A decisive break below this level could open the door for an additional decline of roughly 8% toward the next major support zone.

3. Institutional Factors Continue to Weigh on Bitcoin
Between late June and early July 2026, a large corporate Bitcoin holder sold 3,588 BTC—valued at approximately $216 million—to improve liquidity and support corporate distributions. While the announcement briefly weighed on market sentiment, Bitcoin prices quickly absorbed the additional selling pressure.
A more significant concern is the continued slowdown in institutional demand. Rolling 12-month net flows into Bitcoin ETFs have now turned negative, indicating that institutional investors are allocating less capital to Bitcoin than they did over the previous year.
As capital continues to exit the cryptocurrency market, the amount of Bitcoin held at an unrealized loss has, for the first time in this cycle, surpassed the amount being held at an unrealized profit. At the same time, much of the speculative selling appears to have already occurred, leaving a greater proportion of supply in the hands of long-term investors with stronger conviction.

4. Key Bitcoin Price Levels
Initial Support at $60,000
The $60,000 level continues to attract buying interest ahead of weekly closes, making it Bitcoin's first major support zone. However, repeated tests of this level are gradually weakening its strength and increasing the probability of a downside break.
Major Support at $50,000
Should Bitcoin lose the $60,000 level, buyers may step in at intermediate price areas. Nevertheless, $50,000 remains the most significant technical and psychological support level, where stronger long-term demand is probably expected to emerge.

Resistance between $60,000 and $66,000

Following Bitcoin’s decline toward $55,000, the first important resistance is now located around $60,000–$61,000. A sustained move above this area could open the way toward the stronger resistance zone between $64,000 and $66,000.

As long as Bitcoin remains below $66,000, recovery rallies may continue to face selling pressure. A convincing breakout and sustained close above $66,000 would indicate that buyers have regained momentum and could signal the beginning of a stronger recovery.

5. Overall Market Outlook
The broader market continues to exhibit characteristics typically associated with a mature economic cycle. Record-high household participation in equities, weakening momentum across technology stocks, moderating AI-related investment, and fading institutional demand for Bitcoin all suggest that late-cycle risks are becoming increasingly pronounced.
While equity markets remain resilient in certain sectors, underlying market breadth and investor positioning warrant a more cautious outlook in the months ahead.
